Film Concept

Well, CG Overdrive was really great.. too bad there wasn’t a lucky draw this year though, last year’s had me drooling at the insanely huge Wacom tablets, software like Zbrush, and other generally awesome goodies for the taking.. Still, it was inspiring once again to listen to these people who’ve been out there in the industry doing such amazing stuff. I was kinda stressing out on the plot for my group’s final film project the whole week though, but we’ve finally got it down..

I love how the brush pen and sepia ink I bought really broaden the possibilities of what I can do on the train every day. The door and girl concept drawings were done on the way to school, while the lighting study of the hallway was pencilled on the way home and coloured after.

The best thing about it is since it’s diluted sepia ink, it doesn’t bleed through the page like copics do.. Of course the paper isn’t really meant for wet media and gets kinda crinkly when I close the book, but it’s pretty great for on the go sketches. If only it would fix my problems with anatomy too… but that’s another story..

OIC Portrait Day

OIC Portrait Day June ‘08

I took a two hour break from my character project on Saturday to retain a little bit of my sanity. I went down to Red Dot Museum to check out the OIC Portrait Day at MAAD Market (Market for Artists and Designers). OIC (Organisation of Illustrators Council) is a collective of local Illustrators, they welcome others who love drawing to join in on portrait day too. It’s really an awesome event for people who love to draw (and be drawn).

Reached there around 4+ and promptly started the first ink drawing in the bottom row there.

Portrait Day Sketches

Here’s the fruit of my 2 hours spent there, minus a pen drawing of a couple which they actually bought! Sadly, I didn’t manage to get a picture of it before it went off to its new home (need to bring a camera next time), cause I really liked it. It was a rather cartoony pen drawing that made them look a bit younger, definitely a fun style. Think I’ll be playing more with ink and wash next time, or copics. My pencil portraits are just too slow and kinda blah looking.

Meeting the OIC Gang was awesome too, they’re an immensely friendly bunch of people. Amazingly an old friend from secondary school was there too, as well as one from my NS days. Talking about drawing, brush pens and sketchbooks over dinner was great. It’s left me with the urge to go down to Bras Basah again and hunt down more art supplies!

Added the full drawings to my gallery.. Speaking of which, I think I need to do a bit of restructuring there as well as the site on the whole.. Hmm, something to think about when I’m more free in a few months time.

Hey, anyone interested in coming along for next month’s Portrait Day? It’s on July 5th, 2 – 7pm. Lemme know if you are and we can head down together.

Sketch Plan

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

I was just looking through the B6 sized sketchbook I kept from August to October last year, and I was struck by how much more interesting the drawings in it were compared to the ones I’ve been doing on the train these days..

The drawings on the left are from that sketchbook, and the rest from my current one. Somehow it seems like the element of fun has been lost, and I think it’s largely due to the fact that I switched from using a pen to pencil instead.
