Scott Squires’s VFX Blog

April 13th, 2009

I came across Scott Squire’s blog while looking for more information about the VFX budgeting process.

He’s an effects veteran whose first job off the bat was designing the cloud tank effect for Close Encounters.

His blog is a mix of insightful podcasts/transcripts on a wide variety of Visual Effects related material, as well as some shot breakdowns for work he’s done.

Just read a bit so far, gonna read more of it when I’m more awake.

Hair Raising

Funny hair test from Underdweller that never gets old.  This is what happens when you play with cloth simulations at 3 in the morning. I’m currently doing backups of important stuff, making space for new projects. It’s fun to look back on old work, much more exciting things are ahead though.

Paint Test

Borrowed some pretty useful books from the library, one on painting skin tones, and the other on wildlife. While doing this I was trying to focus on the difference in colour temperature between the shadow and highlights.

Also tried to simplify and not over render things, a bad habit of mine. The tips on colour helped quite a bit I think, but still have a long way to go..

Grandma & Grandpa

January 24th, 2009

This is the final piece I gave to my Grandma last Sunday. You can see where my Mom got her habit of blinking whenever a photo is taken. I thought it would be harder to get my Grandpa’s likeness right, but my Grandma’s likeness was trickier. Would have liked more depth in it, but darker shadows wouldn’t look very nice. Ah well, I’m happy that she liked it. Shall pick up more painting technique when I have the time, this week has been spent troubleshooting my rather temperamental computer..

Joined in the random daily sketch at Public Concept Sketch Group

The topic was Lunch box+God+Maid+Year3000. I started around 11 and finished it late past 12, decided to just post it anyway.  Ended up with a female looking Nutrient Capsule wielding robot..
